How Long Does a Roof Replacement Take? A Day-by-Day Breakdown

One of the first questions homeowners ask when considering a new roof is: “How long will this take?” The good news: most residential roof replacements are completed in 1–3 days.

Day 1: Tear-Off and Inspection

Our crew arrives early and begins removing your old shingles, underlayment, and damaged decking. Once the deck is exposed, we inspect every inch for rot, soft spots, or structural damage. Any issues are addressed before new materials go down.

Day 1–2: Installation

New GAF synthetic underlayment is installed first, followed by ice and water shield in vulnerable areas (valleys, eaves). Then the new GAF Timberline shingles are installed in rows from the bottom up, with ridge cap applied last.

Day 2–3: Cleanup and Final Inspection

We use magnetic rollers to collect any nails in your yard, haul away all old materials, and conduct a final walkthrough with the homeowner. We document the completed roof for your warranty registration.

Factors That Can Extend the Timeline

  • Significant deck damage requiring replacement
  • Complex roof shapes (multiple valleys, dormers)
  • Larger homes (3,500+ sq ft)
  • Unexpected weather
